Description

Pellikola and Solari Productions present two exclusive open-air screenings of ŻEJTUNE, followed by a live concert celebrating the music and spirit of the film.

Following its success with Maltese audiences and on the international festival circuit, ŻEJTUNE will be screened under the stars at the Amphitheatre, Malta National Park, Ta’ Qali, on 28 and 29 August 2026.

Written and directed by Alex Camilleri, ŻEJTUNE follows Mar, who sees a way out of Malta following the death of her estranged mother: selling her inheritance of three pieces of farmland in the countryside. On her journey to claim the land, she meets Nenu, a spirited 80-year-old singer whose vibrant folk music draws her into the colourful traditions of the island she has been so eager to escape. An unexpected connection between past and present develops as Mar slowly warms to the homeland she wanted to leave behind.

Featuring real Maltese folk artists and set against Malta’s striking landscapes, ŻEJTUNE is a heartfelt ode to the power of music and the unexpected places in which we find belonging.

The film premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival in January 2026. It has since played in Maltese cinemas for 12 consecutive weeks and surpassed 10,000 admissions, making it the most-watched Maltese film of the past decade.

ŻEJTUNE has also received international recognition, winning the Best Screenplay Award at the 2026 Tribeca Festival, where it had its North American premiere in June. The film also won the Audience Award at the Mediterranean Film Festival Split and the Award for Best Sound and Music at Cinema Jove in Valencia, Spain.

This unique event will give audiences the opportunity to experience the film in an open-air setting, meet members of the main cast and director Alex Camilleri, and enjoy a live concert after the screening.

Michael Azzopardi and Band will perform music from and inspired by the film, featuring Yasmin Kuymizakis, also known as Joon, Cher Camilleri and Nenu Borg. The concert will include specially written songs incorporating the għana of Nenu Borg, whose voice and presence lie at the heart of ŻEJTUNE.
