Description

Nathan Hayward

Nathan graduated in 1999 with a BA in music (jazz) earning first class honours. Since then, he has gained much performance experience playing many and various jazz piano and bass gigs. He has taught piano and violin in a range of schools, both primary and secondary, in Kent, Bromley, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.

In January 2020 Nathan had his first book “100 Modern Jazz Licks for Piano” published and his second “Beginner jazz piano soloing” in 2021. He is also a songwriter of Christian music. Nathan started teaching at PCYM in January 2019.

The Inscape Jazz Quartet was set up by Nathan and presents a captivating set of original music inspired by the poetry of Gerard Manly Hopkins and his concept of "Inscape" (the unique essence of things). Lyrical, thoughtful and poetic is the order of the day, they also include well loved standards to lend some familiar sounds for the listener. This Quartet brings together some of the UKs most exciting talent to create an ensemble that offers both soulful and fresh sounds."

Sam Miles

Saxophonist Sam Miles graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2013 and since then he has been making a memorable impression on the UK jazz scene. His name is likely to crop up in a number of bands but when you hear him, you begin to appreciate his talent.

Sam is currently based in London although he still plays occasional gigs with Brighton Ska bands. He also plays with Flo Moore (bass) and Peter Elliott (banjo) in a function band The Popcorns.

Sam also leads his own Quartet with Matt Robinson (piano), Sandy Suchodolski (bass) and Ben Brown (drums). The Quartet was featured at a Ray’s Jazz Event at Foyles in Charing Cross Road in 2014. Sam is currently writing music ready for the Quartet to record when the opportunity arises.

Sam Miles is a talented, creative jazz saxophonist with a promising future, you would do well to try and catch him playing live.

Marcus Penrose

Born and raised in Cornwall, bassist Marcus recklessly swapped the relaxed coastal lifestyle for the intensity of London at the age of 18. Over the ensuing years he has performed in countless musical lineups throughout London, the UK and Europe.

Marcus Penrose is a very fine Bassist playing at the highest level. He has a wonderful deep sound and modern swing feel, and his playing is genuinely creative and cliche free. He also writes extremely well with an advanced understanding of harmony and an ear for a beautiful melody.

Recommended for anyone wanting to deepen their knowledge of bass playing or harmony in any context. There is huge knowledge there - go and get it!
