Description

Borma Tbaqbaq – Il-Lingwa tal-Kċina is a new theatrical piece written and performed by Valerie Buhagiar, Angele Galea & Pauline Fenech
One woman. One murder trial. One ancestral island she thought she’d left behind.
When Maltese-Canadian lawyer Josie is called to Malta to defend a man accused of killing a young girl, she expects a legal case—what she uncovers is a reckoning. Caught between modern justice and ancient silence, Josie is thrust into a world where the ghosts of colonisation, patriarchal power, and cultural identity simmer just beneath the surface.
As Josie delves deeper, memories awaken. The scent of baking pastizzi, the haunts of women slaving away in the kitchen, where they whispered language only fit for the kitchen begin to emerge. Could the domestic realm—so often dismissed—be a hidden archive of resistance?
From the bustling diaspora to Malta’s shadowed courtyards, Borma Tbaqbaq weaves defiance, myth, and memory into a rich tapestry of voice, womanhood, and reclamation.
A courtroom drama with ancient roots
A feminist exposition where the kitchen is a battleground
A celebration of heritage, healing, and hard questions
Can a silenced woman and a colonized island find their voices—together?
Bold. Sensual. Unapologetically Maltese.
A story buried for centuries finally comes to a boil.
