With his Symphony No. 2, Aram Khachaturian wrote a moving work about the horror of World War II that mercilessly invaded the Soviet Union in the 1940s. By far more comprehensible and accessible than other of Khachaturian's compositions, the symphony is marked by the dehumanized ferocity of the conflict and the deafening noise of its brutal battles. But it shows also moments of hope in a desolate situation and leads to a heroic finale that must be seen as a prophetic vision of the final victory over Hitler's barbarism. Ending in a “danse macabre”, Jean Sibelius's “Violin Concerto” is also, to a certain extent, a sombre composition. But how much light is shining on the endless melodic lines that in this concert are brought to life by young Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan.
